Final Weekly Round-up
I have now come to the end of my spree to publish 28 green innovation highlights in 28 days. I hope you enjoyed hearing about them.
In this blog, I explored the work that Living Sea Walls are doing to support marine life to thrive and Briiv a start-up that is reinventing the traditional air filter.
Living Sea Walls
The seafloor is impacted by our built environment, the structure of marinas, pontoons and sea walls just isn't enriching enough for biodiversity to thrive. This devastation to their habitat is only going to get worse as we face the threat of rising sea levels, as highlighted by Living Sea Walls, "in Australia where over 80% of the population lives in the coastal zone. But while sea defences protect shorelines, they are often flat structures, devoid of shelter for organisms like fish, invertebrates, and seaweed."
Living Sea Walls, based in Sydney are rejuvenating the oceans with their 'habitat panels' that mimic structures found in mangroves for example. After only two years it's estimated that their habitat panels harbour 36% more marine life. The panels themselves are a product of 20 years of relentless research in ecology and creative design. Thanks to their determination, marine life has flooded back to Sydney's shorelines.
Their sea defences are in operation in 11 locations in Australia and given that the oceans are all connected shorelines as far as Wales and Singapore as feeling the benefit.
Through their work with schools in Australia, and outreach programmes they are spreading the word about their cause and the plight of the oceans! They are also a proud winner of the Earthshot Prize, for their contribution to conservation.
Briiv
Briiv are reinventing the traditional air filter with their stylish, smart and sustainable system.
Their filters are made from 90% natural and biodegradable materials, their filters also have a low energy requirement of 5Vs.
Astonishingly, 1 Briiv filter is the equivalent of 3,043 houseplants. They are "filtering air the way nature intended too."
Briiv highlight that "7 million people die prematurely from air pollution every year? that's more than the population of Denmark every year!" So, their filters holistically make your life better.
On their website, you can also view the air quality forecast in your area, and preview the benefits that a Briiv filter would have on your environment.
"15,000,000 air filters were purchased in 2019 and the filter needs to be replaced every 6-8 months."
Briiv have taken inspiration from nature to design their filters, they have mimicked the microstructure of moss, coconut, elephant grass and hemp to purify air.
Equally, they have pledged to plant a tree for every product sold, and they offer a repair service so that your filter lasts longer.
The way that they are redeveloping air filters is leading the way towards a greener, brighter future.
